Well after seven years, you can definitely say, the more things stay the same the more things stay thge same.
well, that is not exactly true. There have been some improvements. Some work is going on along the coast of the capital (please understand that i´m am avoiding naming certain things so to keep somewhat ´undercover´with regards to internet searches) turning some decaying colonial buildings into some beautiful structures. There is more options regarding food, though, of course, you need the dollars. One old friend here told me she doesn´t understand how, but it seems more and more have dollars. Having a regular job at the university, of course, she doesn´t.
i don´t have a whole lot of time and daily internet access is really beyond my budget, but I hope to post now twice a week. I am working on several stories I hope to get published somewhere in December.
Here is an excerpt from one.. a prelimary version of course...:
Él ultimo?´(the last one?) is the question that is asked as one arrives to wait for the ´guagua´(local bus). This time I was waiting for the #400 to take me from Old H. to G., a beach town 25 km from the capital. It was still light when I had gotten there and got in line. 1 1/2 hours later with no bus in sight it had become very dark, and a young C loudly proclaimed, ´es una tremenda cola.´
His name was Y and he told me he was 24. He obviously had put back a bit of rum, but not too much and he saw in me a chance to vent his frustration. ´This is comm.´he bellowed as the Cs around him grew more and more impacient. And with the well-known gesture of stroking an imaginary beard he said ´And it´s all his fault.´
He was being usually loud in front of so many, very usually loud in fact, especially talking to a foreigner...
